Ivo Petrov Sweeps Through New England 9 Ball Series Season Opener at Silver Cue Billiards in Woburn, MA
26 players came out play for a chance at $1,075.00 in prize money. This might have been a small event but it did not lack talent. Here is a list of notables that attended. Joe Dupuis, Alex Morin, Ivo Petrov, Rick Gatta, Mike Nicaloro, Andy Maynard, and Jose Pinto.As with all NE 9 Ball Series tournament, the races are handicapped and the games are alternating break.
On the winner side final match you would presume that there would be two open level players but with the handicap system we have that was not to be. The race was between an open player, Ivo and a D+ player and a new comer to the tour, Jim F. The match was a race to 7-3, it was a barn burner.
This match was as close as you can get. Ivo won the first 3 games, which put him up 3-0. Then Jim won a game to make the score 3-1. Next Ivo won another game to make the score 4-1. Then Jim won the next game to making the score 4-2, thus putting Jim on the hill.
Ivo was not finished just yet, he won the next 2 games to make the score 6-2 making the match a double hill match. It was Jim’s break and he scratched on the break. At this point everyone in the crowd thought Jim was done. But Ivo made a critical shooting error on the 5 ball and left an opportunity for Jim to win the match. Jim would then scratch on the 6 ball in the side pocket, letting Ivo back to the table and winning the match with a score of 7-2. This gave Ivo his place in the finals.
On the loser’s side finals, it was Jim against Alex Alpert, a race to 5-4.
Alex quickly took a 2 -0 lead and never looked back. It seemed like Jim was out of gas. Alex would win this match with a score of 5-0 to take his place in the finals.
The final was a match between Ivo and Alex, racing to 6-3. Alex had to beat Ivo twice to claim the championship. The first set was a one sided match where Alex would win 3-1 due to a miscue on the eight ball by Ivo. During the second set, Ivo was more focused and he played like a killer and he would win the game with a score of 6-1, to take the championship.
